A town of some 3,500 residents, Záhony has become a key border crossing for Ukrainians going to Hungary, particularly by train. Záhony residents support incoming refugees in a variety of ways, and a local high school has been repurposed to serve as a temporary centre for accommodation with a capacity for 250 refugees, as they pass through the town on their way onward into Hungary or other neighbouring countries. Following the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February, more than 200,000 people have crossed the border from Ukraine into Hungary, to seek refuge from war and an increasingly desperate humanitarian situation.
